The Transcorp Hilton is located in the centre of the capital city’s business district. It is set in beautiful landscaped gardens and is easily accessible from all parts of Nigeria. The hotel offers all the services and facilities of an international business hotel.
Accommodation Hotel accommodation at special conference rates will be offered to participants.
Language The official language of the meeting is English. English is the official language and the most widely spoken language in Nigeria.
Climate Nigeria has 2 major seasons. The dry season which runs from (late November – April) and a raining season from (May to early November). The temperature during both seasons ranges from 22c and 38c.
Getting Around Abuja Taxis in Abuja are plain green colour and relatively safe and easy to use. There are rental car companies such as Avis, Europcar, Sixt, etc who operate non coloured cabs but they have to be pre booked. The private cars that honk for pick up are operating illegally and should be avoided. Taxi from Airport to Abuja City Centre costs approximately £25.00.
Business Hours In general, business hours are Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 5.00pm. Government offices are open weekdays from 7.30 am to 5.00 p.m. Banking hours are 8.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday. The Banks do not shut down for Friday prayers.
Currency Local unit of currency is the naira (N). Notes are available in the denominations of N 500/=, N200/=, N100/=, N50/=, N20/=, N10/=, N5/=. Coins are available in denominations of N 1/=, N. 0.50k/=. You can bring USD, GBP or Euros, all of which are easily convertible and ATMs are becoming more widespread in cities. Credit cards are not widely used or accepted so better to pay cash. Western Union branches are everywhere if you need to get money wired to you.
Electricity Supply Power cuts may occur several times a day. This may go unnoticed because most lodges and hotels (including the conference venue) have 24hour back up power supply. The voltage and plug type in Nigeria are: 220 and 240 volts AC; 3 pin square (standard British) and small 3 pin round (standard India).
Visas All visitors except citizens of the 16 countries that make up the West African political union must possess a valid entry visa on arrival in Nigeria. Nigerian visas are not usually issued at the point of entry. The following are the requirements for obtaining a Nigerian visa: • A valid passport (at least 6 months to expiration). • Three recent passport photographs • A copy of round-trip ticket • A letter of invitation accepting immigration responsibility or evidence of financial support while in Nigeria from individual Nigerians or Nigerian organizations (The conference Organiser will be able to provide you with this once you are registered for the conference).
Vaccinations When travelling to Nigeria vaccinations are required and delegates should seek doctor's advice. After receiving the vaccine, you will be issued an International Certificate of Vaccination, which is honored worldwide. Malaria exists all over West Africa. It is a serious illness transmitted by mosquitoes. It can easily be prevented with some basic precautions. Ask your doctor for appropriate medication.
